Letter Delivered to TD Bank

"We implore TD Bank, the TD conglomerate, and all large banks, insurance companies, asset managers and institutional investors to immediately cease the funding and insuring of fossil fuel projects and to re-align their business interests with the hopes, aspirations and rights of humanity and the natural world by investing instead in the clean, renewable energy we need for a habitable planet." - John Seakwood (Hancock, Mass), Tendai Buddhist Institute

We, a diverse group or faith communities and people, are nere today to deliver a simple and urgent message: TD Bank. and the TD companies to which it belongs must immediate stop funding new fossil fuel projects.
According to the most recent reports of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC), the internationally accepted authority on human-induced climate change, the world must take quick and bold action to reverse our reliance on fossil fuels in order to avoid climate calastrophe.
In reacting to the IPCC reports, Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General has said, "The scientific and moral imperative is clear: there must be no new investment in fossil tuel expansion, including production, infrastructure and exoloration."
The world's climate scientists are telling us that we are currently on a fast track to climate disaster, and the financing of new fossil fuel infrastructure puts that into even higher gear.
And yet, in just the last five years alone, TD companies have invested more than $121 BILLION dolars in new fossil fuel projects
Perhaps the most egregious among these many projects is the Trans Mountain Pipeline. The construction of this pipeline would violate treaties with indigenous peoples, endanger major waterways, and devastate prestine lands, all while fostering the accelerate development of Alberta's tar sands oil, the world's dirtiest, most climate-disrupting oil.
We implore TD Bank, the TD conglomerate, and all large banks, insurance companies, asset managers and institutional investors to immediately cease the funding and insuring of fossil fuel projects and to re-align their business interests with the hopes, aspirations and rights of humanity and the natural world by investing instead in the clean renewable enery that we need for a habitable planet.
The moral precepts of our various faiths, value systems and codes of and codes of ethics compel us to speak out about the sacredness of our shared Earth and against the unjust recklessness of new fossil fuel develment. Imposing impossible burdens on frontline communities and stealing the future from coming generations is immoral and must stop.

Q: Why are we protesting TD Bank?

A: They are funding the Line 3, a tarsands pipeline, in northern Minnesota.

Q: What is LINE 3?

Enbridge, a Canadian company, is building the Line 3 pipeline to carry tar sands crude oil from Alberta, Canada down through Minnesota. Line 3 will be 300 miles long and carry 800,000 barrels per day of tar sands, the dirtiest, most highly corrosive and carbon intensive of fuels.

Enbridge’s Line 3 will cut a new trench, crossing dozens of waterways (including the Mississippi River, twice), Native American treaty lands, and sacred wild rice areas.

Line 3 will add 193 million tons of CO2 to the atmosphere each year, equivalent to adding 38 million cars to the roads. Completion of Line 3 would be equal to adding 50 new coal plants running for 50 years.

The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) just released their latest report on August 9th. They said that without a doubt, the planet is warming, causing fires, droughts, hurricanes, etc., and that the warming is caused by human activity, specifically burning fossil fuels. The IPCC left no doubt. This is a crisis. We do not have time to waste.

We must make a transition to renewable energy and stop burning fossil fuel. It is imperative to stop building more fossil fuel infrastructure such as the Line3 pipeline.

Please take your money out of TD Bank (a Canadian bank) to help save our enviroment.

Greetings,

Beginning this coming Friday, September 10th from noon to 1pm, we will be joining the statewide and national movement to pressure TD Bank to divest from the fossil fuel industry. We hope you will join us!

TD's website claims a commitment to "elevate the quality of the environment" -- but has invested $121 BILLION in the fossil fuel industry since 2016, making it the 5th largest investor in fossil fuel in the world.

TD is also specifically the world's top tar sands oil investor, having loaned more than 13 million dollars since 2016 to Enbridge -- the Canadian company that owns the Line 3 tar sands pipeline -- to expand Line 3 from Alberta, Canada to Superior, Wisconsin. It is designed to carry almost a million barrels of oil per day -- and go through untouched wetlands, through Ashinaabe treaty lands, through the headwaters of the Mississippi River. The native people whose lands and treaties this will violate have been bravely fighting this for a long time, and our protest is also in solidarity with them.

We will be calling on people entering the bank to move their money to another bank, and to tell TD why. Will you join us? We have posters and hand-outs; all we need is some of you to join us. No need to make a commitment to every week -- just bring your hopeful, peaceful spirit when you can, and stay however long you can. We will be there each Friday for at least the next 3 months.
